Cocaine is a powerful and extremely addictive stimulant drug that is made from the leaves of the coca plant, which is native to South Africa. When used, this drug produces short-term euphoria, bursts of energy, and talkativeness. However, it also causes potentially dangerous effects such as a raised heart rate and high blood pressure. Cocaine comes in a powdered form, which is inhaled through the nose or dissolved in water and injected directly into the bloodstream, or as a rock crystal that can be heated and smoked. The intensity and duration of the pleasurable effects associated with cocaine depend upon the way in which it is administered. Since a cocaine high lasts only a short time, which leads to repeated binge-style use of many doses over time, the body becomes dependent upon the substance. Individuals will continue to use to keep up their high and to avoid the unpleasantness of a crash.

Helping someone with a cocaine addiction can not only be a long and challenging process, but at times an extremely frustrating one. If you have a loved one who is struggling with a cocaine addiction, first and foremost remember that you are not alone; support is always available to you. Here are some ways that you may be able to help your loved one overcome their cocaine addiction:
- Talk to your loved one: Take the time to speak privately to your loved one about your concerns you have surrounding their cocaine use and allow them to openly express their feelings.
- Establish boundaries: Make sure that you explain to your loved one that you will not provide them with money to fuel their drug habit or participate in any other activity that will contribute to their unhealthy behavior.
- Understand the reality of addiction: By learning all that you can about the cycle of addiction you will better understand what your loved one is going through and how you can support them.
- Remain consistent: Consistently communicate your concerns with your loved one and encourage them to get the treatment that they need.
Why Consider Treatment at Red River
Since cocaine is a stimulant, it causes an individual’s heart to beat faster and the blood vessels to constrict, which causes high blood pressure, heart attacks, and strokes. For those who become addicted to cocaine and do not get treatment it can cause them to develop feelings of restlessness, irritability, paranoia, and anxiety. Additionally, it is common for cocaine addicts to be unable to attend school, complete work responsibilities, or maintain healthy interpersonal relationships. Many people who use experience financial difficulties causing them to result to borrowing or even stealing money in order to get more drugs. Furthermore, there may be a decline in their physical appearance, a large number of dental problems, and in some cases death due to overdose.
A rehab clinic is an extremely valuable way to successfully treat addictions. An inpatient program will provide individuals with a series of treatment modalities that are tailored to the unique needs of each patient. Through these various methods, individuals are able to get to the underlying reason for why they started using cocaine in the first place, as well as be able to treat any co-occurring mental disorders that may be present. By temporarily stepping away from their everyday home lives, individuals are also able to escape triggers that cause them to use and focus completely on getting better.

Types of Treatment Offered at Red River
At Red River’s rehab clinic we are able to provide assessments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, free of charge. All assessments are conducted by a licensed professional and then reviewed by another licensed team member or supervisor to determine if we will be able to fully meet the patient’s needs. Our dedicated psychiatric staff and multidisciplinary treatment team provide medical management and various therapies designed to encompass all of the needs of all of our patients. We utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques, including the following:
Medication management: Medications may be used as part of the treatment process for those who have become addicted to cocaine as a means to treat the symptoms of any co-occurring disorders that may be present. All patients are seen daily by a psychiatrist in order to ensure that the medications that have been prescribed are working properly and to make any changes that may be necessary.
Group therapy: Red River’s treatment clinic are group-focused, which means that all patients attend a variety of group sessions each day. Some of the topics that are covered in these groups include effective communication skills, appropriate assertive behavior skills, anger management, conflict resolution, relapse prevention, and medication management. On our progressive care unit, additional groups and activities are held in order to assist in reality orientation.
Family therapy: At Red River in Texas, we see each disorder as a family disorder because these illnesses not only impact the life of the individual who has the disorder, but the lives of each patient’s family members as well. We believe that if the family is not involved, then the changes that are made during the treatment process will not be carried over into the home environment and the risk of relapse will be greater. As a result, we encourage family sessions to occur on a regular basis in all units and can be done via telephone if necessary. On our child and adolescent unit, at least one family session is required prior to the patient’s discharge.
Individual therapy: Individual sessions occur on an as-needed basis for all units with the exception of our military unit where patients have a minimum of one individual therapy session each week.
Recreational therapy occurs at least once per day and includes activities such as physical therapy and yoga.
Daily school is provided for all of our child and adolescent patients. There is an onsite school room and lessons are led by our public school district’s teachers.
Continuing Care and Levels of Treatment
At Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls, we begin planning for discharge the moment patients enter the hospital. This is done in order to help ensure that the transition process to the next level of treatment is as smooth as possible. The discharge plan is consistently reviewed and updated throughout the individual’s stay so that, when the time for discharge arrives, the patient is already set up for the next step in his or her recovery process. We believe that aftercare is a major part of treatment, so we ensure that the unique needs of each individual will be cared for, whether that be a step down into our partial hospitalization program (PHP) or our intensive outpatient program (IOP), or being provided with referrals for traditional outpatient services. For patients who require a structured plan in order to return to life’s daily routines, Red River also provides onsite therapy through our Pathways program which includes coping skills training and supervised medication management. Whatever your needs may be, our caring and compassionate staff will make sure that you are comfortable and confident as you embark on your next stage of recovery.
