Developing an addiction to heroin can destroy a person’s life. It is an addiction that can develop almost instantly, sometimes even immediately following the first use. Heroin works as a depressant to the central nervous system, causing the person who uses it to experience extreme feelings of euphoria by increasing feelings of pleasure and well-being while simultaneously minimizing the brain’s ability to feel pain. Due to the fact that these euphoric feelings are so desirable when the high begins to fade, many people will instantly crave more of the drug to begin feeling those pleasurable sensations once again. As heroin takes control of a person’s mind, other aspects of his or her life slowly become less and less important and less of a priority. Relationships can become strained, responsibilities can be left unfulfilled, and one’s physical health can quickly deteriorate. While addiction to heroin is a devastating, life threatening problem, heroin addiction can be successfully overcome with proper treatment. Red River wants to help you get your life back.

How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for heroin addiction in Wichita Falls, TX

Having a family member or loved one who is addicted to heroin can be aggravating, frightening, and heart-wrenching. You are likely to feel angry or frustrated at his or her inability or unwillingness to stop using despite all of the havoc that the heroin use has caused on his or her life. You are likely to also feel scared about what is going to happen to your loved one if he or she does not stop participating in this risky behavior. Even though you know that your loved one needs help, you may feel apprehensive about bringing up your concerns because you are worried about how he or she will react. More than likely, your loved one will react with anger, hostility, or defensiveness, but that does not mean that he or she disagrees with you. Accepting that one needs help can be extremely difficult, so do not let your loved one’s negative response deter you.

Here are some things to keep in mind when talking to your loved one about your concerns:

  • Before beginning the conversation, take the time to educate yourself about addiction so that you can be empathetic to the fact that your loved one is truly suffering from a disease.
  • Try not to sound accusatory or judgmental when speaking to your loved one. He or she is going to be on the defensive regardless of how he or she is approached, but acting as though you are condemning your loved one will only make matters worse.
  • Do not throw away or hide any of your loved one’s drugs. This may seem like an easy way to get your loved one to stop using but, in reality, it will only cause him or her to become angry and he or she will ultimately find a way to get more of the drug.
  • Provide your loved one with options for treatment that you have researched.
  • Reach out for support from other people in your loved one’s life so that you are not facing the intervention on your own.
  • Remain unconditionally supportive.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for heroin addiction at Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX

Living life addicted to heroin can be catastrophic. When people’s lives are ruled by the high that they receive from a substance like heroin, they will find that their world has rapidly started collapsing around them. Things that they were once able to do without hesitancy, like perform appropriately at work or school, suddenly become difficult. For these individuals, the top priority has become obtaining and using heroin, leaving many other responsibilities left unfulfilled. Relationships that were once important to them no longer seem to matter, activities that were once enjoyed are no longer enjoyable, and there is no longer any motivation to perform the normal tasks of everyday life. These individuals are stuck in the cycle of addiction and can feel helpless to change. But change is possible; recovery is possible.

A rehab clinic is one of the most successful ways that heroin addiction is treated. When people are admitted into an inpatient program, they are first provided with the opportunity to undergo medical detoxification in a safe environment. While in an inpatient program, these individuals are also temporarily removed from their home environments which likely hold many triggers that lead to their use. They are safe from the temptation to use and will receive support from mental health professionals and other individuals who are also struggling with addictions. Their sole focus can be placed on healing and recovery so that they can return to a life of sobriety.

Types of Treatment

Types of heroin addiction treatment offered at Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX

Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls provides assessments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, free of charge. These assessments are conducted by a licensed professional and then reviewed by another licensed team member or a supervisor. If it is determined that we will be able to fully meet the patient’s needs, one of our physicians will be contacted and the admissions process will begin. Our dedicated psychiatric staff and multidisciplinary treatment team provide medical management and various therapies designed to encompass all of the needs of all of our patients. We utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques, including the following:

Detoxification: When patients come to Red River’s addiction rehab and are struggling with chemical dependency concerns, we provide a 5-7 day stay in our detox unit. Here, every individual receives 24-hour monitoring by a team of nurses as his or her body becomes cleansed of any toxic substances that are present. For those who are struggling with an addiction to heroin, detox marks the beginning of the therapeutic process. To learn more about this process, please see our detoxification page.

Medication management: Medication may be used as part of the treatment process for a heroin addiction, especially when the person is suffering from a co-occurring mental illness. All patients are seen daily by a psychiatrist in order to ensure that the medication is working properly and to make any changes that may be necessary.

Group therapy: Red River’s addiction treatment clinic is group-focused with multiple groups being held on a daily basis. Some of the topics that are covered in these groups include effective communication skills, appropriate assertive behavior skills, anger management, conflict resolution, relapse prevention, and medication management. On our geriatric unit, additional groups and activities are held in order to assist in reality orientation.

Family therapy: At Red River in Wichita Falls, we see each disorder as a family disorder because these illnesses not only impact the life of the individual who has the disorder but the lives of each patient’s family members as well. We believe that if the family is not involved, then the changes that are made during the treatment process will not be carried over into the home environment. As a result, we encourage family sessions to occur on a regular basis in all units and can be done via telephone if necessary. On our child and adolescent unit, at least one family session is required prior to the patient’s discharge.

Individual therapy: Individual sessions occur on an as-needed basis for all units except our military unit where patients have a minimum of one individual therapy session each week.

Recreational therapy occurs at least once per day and includes activities such as physical therapy and yoga.

Daily school is provided for all of our child and adolescent patients. There is an onsite school room and lessons are led by our public school district’s teachers.

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for heroin

At Red River Hospital, we begin planning for discharge the moment patients enter the hospital. This plan is consistently reviewed and updated throughout the individual’s stay so that, when the time for discharge arrives, the patient is already set up for the next step in his or her recovery process. We believe that aftercare is a major part of treatment, so we ensure that the unique needs of each individual will be cared for, whether that be a step down into our partial hospitalization program (PHP) or our intensive outpatient program (IOP), or being provided with referrals for traditional outpatient services. For patients who require a structured plan in order to return to life’s daily routines, Red River also provides onsite therapy through our Pathways program which includes coping skills training and supervised medication management. Whatever your needs may be, our caring and compassionate staff will make sure that you are comfortable and confident as you embark on your next stage of recovery.
