How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for depression

Having a family member or loved one who is plagued by the seemingly endless cycle of depression, you may feel powerless to find a way to help him or her. You may also be wondering if your concerns are unfounded; wondering if your loved one is just going through a rough time but is not truly suffering from depression. If you are experiencing this type of debate, here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Is your loved one isolating him or herself from family and friends?
  • Has your loved one been repeatedly missing days of work or school?
  • Does your loved one seem chronically fatigued?
  • Have there been changes in your loved one’s eating and/or sleeping patterns?
  • Are there noticeable changes in your loved one’s appearance? For example, is his or her hygiene lacking or has he or she seemed to stop caring about how he or she looks?
  • Has your loved one stopped participating in activities that he or she once enjoyed?
  • Has your loved one been expressing inexplicable feelings of guilt about things over which he or she has no control?
  • Do you suspect that your loved one is harming him or herself?
  • Has your loved one made fleeting comments regarding death?

If any of these questions ring true to what you have been noticing in your loved one, then it is time to seek out professional help. Depression is a treatable illness, but without appropriate intervention, your loved one’s symptoms are likely to continue worsening.

Types of Treatment

Types of depression treatment offered at Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX

Red River Hospital provides free assessments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These assessments are conducted by a licensed professional and then reviewed by a team member or supervisor. If it is determined that we will be able to fully meet the patient’s needs, the physician is contacted and the admissions process begins. Our dedicated psychiatric staff and multidisciplinary treatment team provide medical management and various therapies designed to encompass all of the needs of all of our patients. We utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques as part of our inpatient treatment, including the following:

Medication management: Anti-depressant medications are commonly prescribed as part of the process of fully treating one’s depressive symptoms. All patients are seen daily by a psychiatrist in order to ensure that the medication is working properly and to make any changes that may be required.

Group therapy: Our inpatient treatment is group-focused, with a variety of groups being held daily. Some of the topics that are covered in these groups include effective communication skills, conflict resolution, appropriate assertive behavior skills, anger management, and medication management. On our geriatric unit, additional groups and activities are held in order to assist in reality orientation.

Family therapy: At Red River, we see each disorder as a family disorder because these illnesses can have a negative impact on the lives of each patient’s family members. We believe that if the family is not involved, then the changes that are made during the treatment process will not be carried over into the home environment. As a result, we encourage family sessions to occur on a regular basis in all units and can be done via phone if necessary. On our child and adolescent unit, at least one family session is required prior to the patient’s discharge.

Individual therapy: Individual sessions occur on an as-needed basis for all units except our military unit where patients have a minimum of one individual therapy session each week.

Recreational therapy occurs at least once per day and includes activities such as yoga and physical therapy.

Daily school is provided for all of our child and adolescent patients. There is an onsite school room and lessons are led by our public school district’s teachers.

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for depression

At Red River Hospital, we recognize that the discharge process can be an intimidating time for patients, so we begin the discharge planning the moment our patients enter the hospital. This plan is consistently reviewed and updated throughout the individual’s stay so that, when the time for discharge arrives, the patient is already set up for the next step in his or her recovery process. We believe that aftercare is a major part of every patient’s treatment, so we ensure that the unique needs of every individual will be cared for, whether that be a step down into our partial hospitalization program (PHP) or our intensive outpatient program (IOP), or being provided with referrals for traditional outpatient services. For patients who require a structured plan in order to return to life’s daily routines, Red River provides onsite therapy, supervised medication management, and coping skills training. Whatever your needs may be, our caring and compassionate staff will make sure that you are comfortable and confident as you embark on your next stage of recovery.
