Oxycodone, which can be prescribed by itself or included in the ingredients found in medications like OxyContin and Roxicodone, is a painkiller that’s classified as an opioid. When consumed to alleviate pain, this medication is far more effective than over-the-counter pain relievers, as its potent nature can significantly reduce pain and restore comfort and functioning to a person’s life. However, if an individual takes oxycodone in a manner that’s against what a doctor recommends, or if this painkiller is taken with the goal of self-medicating or achieving a high, a consequence may be the development of a powerful addiction that’s rife with a myriad of obstacles that must be overcome.

Regardless of the circumstances that may have led you to initially abuse oxycodone, if you’re now struggling with an addiction to this medication, you may be in need of professional help to reclaim your life. The longer oxycodone is abused, the more reliant your body can become to the presence of it, and thus needing it in order to function each day. Additionally, when this kind of tolerance develops, you may be saddled with symptoms of withdrawal if you try to abruptly end your misuse of oxycodone. With this effect, you may have a challenging time leaving the abuse of oxycodone in the past. However, when you begin rehab services within a reputable clinic or treatment center, a sober and healthy life can take the place of the one that was previously consumed by the abuse of oxycodone.

How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for oxycodone addiction

When you found out that your friend or family member has been abusing oxycodone, you probably felt a variety of emotions. From anger, to fear, to worry, to disappointment, you likely jumped from one feeling to another while trying to understand why and how this sort of issue developed. However, since your loved one is grappling with an oxycodone abuse problem, it’s important for you to know that he or she needs you right now. By taking a proactive approach and following through on the following suggestions, you might be able to help this special person in your life defeat an addiction to oxycodone once and for all:

Learn about oxycodone.

  • Be sure to familiarize yourself with the signs of oxycodone abuse and intoxication so that you can identify when your friend or family member has consumed this drug.
  • Be able to recognize the symptoms of oxycodone overdose, as this can help you to know if emergency medical help needs to take place.
  • Give yourself an education on the effects of oxycodone abuse. In doing so, you’ll be able to understand your loved one’s treatment needs, which can help you narrow down the centers, rehab providers, or clinics that may be able to help this person.

Learn about the options for care that can help your loved one

  • Consult with addiction specialists in your community who can tell you about the types of services that have helped others combat an oxycodone addiction.
  • As you search for centers that can help your friend or family member, be sure to find ones that offer detox. Detox can play an integral role in a person’s recovery journey and can assist your loved one in making great strides towards defeating this sort of chemical dependency problem.
  • Familiarize yourself with the admissions processes at a select few treatment centers. This can help you prepare your loved one for attending services when he or she is ready to do so.

It can also be extremely beneficial to have a conversation with your loved one about the need for treatment, and provide him or her with the information that you found during your research. Listen to what he or she has to say about seeking treatment, and do all that you can to alleviate any worry that he or she may have about getting professional help.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for oxycodone addiction at Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX

Continuing to battle an addiction to oxycodone is by no means a pleasant experience. Without the help of professionals who can assist you in leaving this sort of addiction behind, you may be vulnerable to experiencing many negative effects that can be life-altering. For example, you may not be able to carry out the responsibilities of your job, and become unemployed as a result of your poor occupational performance. You might experience increased conflict and discord with your loved ones, who may distance themselves from you or end meaningful connections that you once had with them. Your health could also be in jeopardy, as the misuse of oxycodone can cause vital organ damage and an overdose that could be fatal. Mental health disorder symptoms are also known to plague those who abuse oxycodone, as this painkiller can either make already-existing symptoms worse or trigger the onset of such illnesses. Considering the adversity that you could face by staying addicted to oxycodone, it’s to your advantage that you seek professional help. While engaged in an effective program, you can begin living the oxycodone-free life that you hope for.

Inpatient rehab programs are extremely effective settings for successfully treating addictions to drugs like oxycodone. By entering into an inpatient program, individuals will be able to detox from all substances, which can allow their bodies to become free of substances of abuse in a safe and secure setting. Additionally, inpatient rehab can help individuals understand the underlying cause of their addictions, and address any mental health issues that may be present at the same time. Through a number of different therapeutic techniques, individuals can learn pain management and other coping skills to help them remain oxycodone-free. By temporarily stepping away from their everyday lives, these individuals are also away from the triggers that likely contributed to the development of an addiction to oxycodone or other substances. In this comforting and nurturing setting, people are able to safely and effectively work towards a full recovery.

Types of Treatment

Types of oxycodone addiction treatment offered at Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX

Red River Hospital provides free assessments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These assessments are conducted by a licensed professional and then reviewed by another licensed team member or a supervisor. If it is determined that we will be able to fully meet the patient’s needs, one of our physicians will be contacted and the admissions process will begin. Our dedicated psychiatric staff and multidisciplinary treatment team provide medical management and various therapies designed to fully treat all of our patients’ needs. We utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques as part of our inpatient rehab program, including the following:

Detoxification: When patients come to Red River and are struggling with an addiction to oxycodone, we may recommend a 5-7 day stay in our detox unit. Here, every individual receives 24-hour monitoring by a team of nurses as his or her body becomes cleansed of any toxic substances that are present. In many cases, detox is the first phase of care for those who are struggling with an addiction to oxycodone. To learn more about this process, please see our detoxification program page.

Medication management: Medications may be used as part of the treatment process for treating oxycodone addiction. This is especially true when the person is suffering from a co-occurring mental illness at the same time. All patients are seen daily by a psychiatrist in order to ensure that the medications that have been prescribed are working properly, and so that changes to said prescriptions can made as necessary.

Group therapy: Red River’s inpatient rehab programs are group-focused, with a variety of groups being held daily. Some of the topics that are covered in these groups include effective communication skills, appropriate assertive behavior skills, anger management, conflict resolution, relapse prevention, and medication management. On our geriatric unit, additional groups and activities are held in order to assist in reality orientation. Therefore, as an individual is working on recovering from an addiction to oxycodone, group therapy will be part of his or her recovery experience.

Family therapy: At Red River Hospital, we believe that an addiction to oxycodone affects more than just the person who is abusing it. For this reason, we are proud to offer family therapy sessions. We believe that if the family is not involved, then the changes that are made during the treatment process will not be carried over into the home environment. As a result, we encourage family sessions to occur on a regular basis in all units, which can be done via telephone if necessary. On our child and adolescent unit, at least one family session is required prior to the patient’s discharge.

Individual therapy: Individual sessions occur on an as-needed basis for all units except our military unit, where patients have a minimum of one individual therapy session each week.

Recreational therapy: Recreational therapy occurs at least once per day and includes activities such as physical therapy and yoga.

Daily school: Daily education is provided for all of our child and adolescent patients. There is an onsite school room, and lessons are led by our public school district’s teachers.

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for oxycodone addiction

At Red River Hospital, we begin planning for discharge the moment patients enter our hospital. This plan is consistently reviewed and updated throughout the individual’s stay so that when the time for discharge arrives, the patient is already set up for the next step in his or her recovery process. We believe that aftercare is a major part of oxycodone treatment. We ensure that the unique needs of each individual will be cared for, whether that means stepping down into our partial hospitalization program (PHP) or our intensive outpatient program (IOP), or being provided with referrals for traditional outpatient services. For patients who require a structured plan in order to return to life’s daily routines, Red River Hospital also provides onsite therapy through our Pathways program, which is a clinic that provides coping skills training and supervised medication management. Whatever your needs may be, our caring and compassionate staff will make sure that you are comfortable and confident as you embark on your next stage of recovery.
