Commonly referred to as benzos, benzodiazepines are medications that can relieve the symptoms of anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, and certain seizure disorders. Doctors who prescribe benzos to their patients often supply them with a warning that these types of prescription medications should never be abused as they can cause a disorienting high and become the source of a complex addiction that can adversely impact a person’s overall life. In fact, physicians frequently state that benzodiazepines shouldn’t be misused at the same time as other substances, as combining benzos with other drugs can inflict a great deal of damage on an individual’s health.

If you’d like to put your abuse of benzodiazepines to rest and begin living the healthy life you deserve, you can make a life-changing choice to get professional treatment and put an end to this sort of substance abuse problem once and for all. Without help, you may experience relapse after relapse due to the withdrawal symptoms that can happen when you stop your benzo abuse alone. Additionally, you may develop an even stronger addiction to these drugs, or start to engage in the abuse of other substances at the same time. But, with the assistance of reputable rehab services, know that recovery is possible and a future that’s drug-free can be just on the horizon.

How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for benzo addiction

Sometimes those who are grappling with an addiction to benzos need the support and encouragement of their close friends and family members to help them get the services they require to become well again. Even if these individuals don’t say so explicitly, the backing of loved ones can sometimes make the difference between staying addicted to these types of medications and ending this form of chemical dependency. Therefore, if you’re someone who cares about an individual battling an addiction to benzodiazepines, know that following through on the suggestions listed below can possibly get your loved one into treatment sooner rather than later:

Speak to addiction professionals in your community who can provide you with the following invaluable information:

  • The warning signs of benzo abuse and intoxication
  • The telltale signs of overdose and when to call 9-1-1 on behalf of your loved one
  • The sort of services that can be effective in helping your friend or family member defeat an addiction to these drugs
  • The ways in which treatment can be accessed, including what information may be needed to complete an assessment for admission
  • Helpful ways of speaking to your loved one about the need for and benefits of treatment

With this information, plan on having a conversation with your loved one. Be sure to have this discussion alone or with others who are also as committed as you are in helping this person. During this conversation, make sure to address the following points:

  • The benefits of seeking treatment
  • The effects of remaining addicted to benzodiazepines
  • The names of the treatment centers, rehab clinics, and programs that may be able to help your loved one
  • Your intentions of support for your loved one
  • The steps that need to be taken to start treatment at a particular center

By taking a proactive approach and adhering to the above suggestions, it’s quite possible that the person you care about will be open to and begin services to overcome his or her benzo abuse problem.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for benzo addiction at Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX

Even though they can be prescribed for legitimate medical reasons, benzodiazepine abuse can cause a great deal of upheaval within a person’s life if treatment isn’t received. Researchers are now finding that a long-standing history of benzo abuse can cause memory problems and even issues with cognitive functioning when an individual is much older. Furthermore, the abuse of these sort of substances can trigger the onset of mental health concerns including symptoms of depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and other such issues. Problems with focus, attention, and the ability to concentrate are also known to impact the lives of those who abuse benzos. Additionally, it’s possible for a person to lose his or her job due to the misuse of these medications, experience the demise of meaningful relationships, and have more contact with law enforcement, which could eventually lead to arrest and incarceration. If these effects have happened within your own life, or if you’d like to avoid them entirely, it’s a good idea to consider seeking out addiction rehab services. With the support of dedicated treatment professionals, you can heal from the physical effects of benzo abuse, and prevent the other detriments that are known to occur because of this kind of addiction.

Inpatient rehab programs are extremely effective settings for successfully treating addictions to drugs like benzos. By entering into an inpatient program, individuals will be able to detox from all substances, which can allow their bodies to become free of substances of abuse in a safe and secure setting. Additionally, inpatient rehab can help individuals understand the underlying cause of their addictions, and address any mental health issues that may be present at the same time. Through a number of different therapeutic techniques, individuals can learn pain management and other coping skills to help them remain benzodiazepine-free. By temporarily stepping away from their everyday lives, these individuals are also stepping away from the triggers that likely contributed to the development of their addictions to benzos or other substances. In this comforting and nurturing setting, people are able to safely and effectively work towards a full recovery.

Types of Treatment

Types of benzo addiction treatment offered at Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX

Red River Hospital provides free assessments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These assessments are conducted by a licensed professional and then reviewed by another licensed team member or a supervisor. If it is determined that we will be able to fully meet the patient’s needs, one of our physicians will be contacted and the admissions process will begin. Our dedicated psychiatric staff and multidisciplinary treatment team provide medical management and various therapies designed to fully treat all of our patients’ needs. We utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques as part of our inpatient rehab program, including the following:

Detoxification: When patients come to Red River and are struggling with an addiction to benzos, we may recommend a 5-7 day stay in our detox unit. Here, every individual receives 24-hour monitoring by a team of nurses as his or her body becomes cleansed of any toxic substances that are present. In many cases, detox is the first phase of care for those who are struggling with an addiction to benzodiazepines. To learn more about this process, please see our detoxification program page.

Medication management: Medications may be used as part of the treatment process for treating benzo addiction. This is especially true when the person is suffering from a co-occurring mental illness at the same time. All patients are seen daily by a psychiatrist in order to ensure that the medications that have been prescribed are working properly, and so that changes to said prescriptions can made as necessary.

Group therapy: Red River’s inpatient rehab programs are group-focused, with a variety of groups being held daily. Some of the topics that are covered in these groups include effective communication skills, appropriate assertive behavior skills, anger management, conflict resolution, relapse prevention, and medication management. On our geriatric unit, additional groups and activities are held in order to assist in reality orientation. Therefore, as an individual is working on recovering from an addiction to benzodiazepines, group therapy will be part of his or her recovery experience.

Family therapy: At Red River Hospital, we believe that an addiction to benzos affects more than just the person who is abusing it. For this reason, we are proud to offer family therapy sessions. We believe that if the family is not involved, then the changes that are made during the treatment process will not be carried over into the home environment. As a result, we encourage family sessions to occur on a regular basis in all units, which can be done via telephone if necessary. On our child and adolescent unit, at least one family session is required prior to the patient’s discharge.

Individual therapy: Individual sessions occur on an as-needed basis for all units except our military unit, where patients have a minimum of one individual therapy session each week.

Recreational therapy: Recreational therapy occurs at least once per day and includes activities such as physical therapy and yoga.

Daily school: Daily education is provided for all of our child and adolescent patients. There is an onsite school room, and lessons are led by our public school district’s teachers.

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for benzo

At Red River Hospital, we begin planning for discharge the moment patients enter our hospital. This plan is consistently reviewed and updated throughout the individual’s stay so that when the time for discharge arrives, the patient is already set up for the next step in his or her recovery process. We believe that aftercare is a major part of benzodiazepine treatment. We ensure that the unique needs of each individual will be cared for, whether that means stepping down into our partial hospitalization program (PHP) or our intensive outpatient program (IOP), or being provided with referrals for traditional outpatient services. For patients who require a structured plan in order to return to life’s daily routines, Red River Hospital also provides onsite therapy through our Pathways program, which is a clinic that provides coping skills training and supervised medication management. Whatever your needs may be, our caring and compassionate staff will make sure that you are comfortable and confident as you embark on your next stage of recovery.
