Drinking alcohol is a common occurrence in many social situations, which is why it is not always easy to identify when your drinking has crossed the line from moderate or social use to an actual drinking problem. While it is perfectly acceptable to enjoy a glass of wine at the end of a long work day, or go out with friends to a bar on the weekend, if you have begun to consume alcohol as a way to cope with difficulties or to avoid particularly upsetting feelings then it may indicate the presence of a problem. The bottom line is, if drinking is causing issues in your life, then you have a drinking problem. Alcohol abuse is a pattern of drinking that can result in a number of different negative consequences, such as failure to attend to important responsibilities, physical injury, or ongoing relationship turmoil. Alcohol addiction, on the other hand, is the most severe form of problem drinking and indicates that an individual has become physically dependent upon alcohol.

How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for alcohol addiction

If someone you love is either abusing or addicted to alcohol then you are most likely facing a number of different emotions, most of which are probably causing you great distress. While you are most likely worried and afraid for your loved one, you may also be angry because you do not understand why he or she would continue to drink when it is slowly destroying his or her life. While your loved one needs help, it is also important for you to take care of yourself, so a good place to start is by joining a support group where you can meet with others who are going through the same challenges. This can be a tremendous source of comfort and support for you during this difficult time. Even though you cannot force your loved one to stop drinking, you can help him or her to realize that a drinking problem exists and that he or she needs help. Here are some things that can help you to get your loved one the help he or she needs:

  • Educate yourself about alcohol addiction
  • Share your concerns with your loved one
  • Set clear boundaries and consequences
  • Do not not cover up for him or her
  • Remain calm and do not be judgmental when you speak to him or her
  • Help find rehab options that would be best suited for his or her personal needs
  • Continue to provide him or her with support throughout the whole recovery process

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for alcohol addiction at Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX

Alcohol abuse and addiction will eventually come to affect all areas of a person’s life if he or she does not receive the treatment so desperately needed. Long-term alcohol abuse can lead to serious health complications, affecting every organ in the body, including the brain. Additionally, alcohol abuse and addiction can cause problems at work or school, create financial difficulties, and leave you in constant conflict with family and friends. Those who have become dependent on alcohol often become emotionally unstable and are at a higher risk for the development of certain mental health disorders, such as depression.

A treatment rehab clinic is an extremely valuable way to successfully treat addictions. By entering into an inpatient program, individuals will first be able to medically detox from all substances, allowing their bodies to become drug and alcohol-free in a safe and secure setting. Additionally, as part of the therapeutic process, people will be provided with the opportunity to confront the underlying emotions that surround their continued alcohol use, as well as begin treating any co-occurring mental disorders that may be present. By temporarily stepping away from their everyday home lives, individuals are also able to escape some of the triggers that cause them to drink. In this setting, people are able to safely and effectively work towards a full recovery.

Types of Treatment

Types of alcohol addiction treatment offered at Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX

At Red River’s treatment clinic we are able to provide assessments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, free of charge. All assessments are conducted by a licensed professional and then reviewed by another licensed team member or supervisor to determine if we will be able to fully meet the patient’s needs. Our dedicated psychiatric staff and multidisciplinary treatment team provide medical management and various therapies designed to encompass all of the needs of all of our patients. We utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques as part of our services, including the following:

Detoxification: When patients come to Red River’s rehabilitation clinic and are struggling with chemical dependency concerns, we provide a 5-7 day stay in our detox unit. Here, every individual receives 24 hour monitoring by a team of nurses as his or her body becomes cleansed of any toxic substances that are present. For those who are struggling with alcohol addiction, detox marks the beginning of the therapeutic process. To learn more about this process, please see our detoxification program page.

Medication management: Medications may be used as part of the treatment process for alcohol addiction in order to help treat the symptoms of any co-occurring disorders that may exist. All patients are seen daily by a psychiatrist in order to ensure that the medications that have been prescribed are working properly and to make any changes that may be necessary.

Group therapy: Red River’s treatment clinic is group-focused, which means that all patients attend a variety of group sessions each day. Some of the topics that are covered in these groups include effective communication skills, appropriate assertive behavior skills, anger management, conflict resolution, relapse prevention, and medication management. On our geriatric unit, additional groups and activities are held in order to assist in reality orientation.

Family therapy: At Red River, we see each disorder as family disorder because these illnesses not only impact the life of the individual who has the disorder, but the lives of each patient’s family members as well. We believe that if the family is not involved, then the changes that are made during the treatment process will not be carried over into the home environment. As a result, we encourage family sessions to occur on a regular basis in all units. Family sessions can be done via telephone if necessary. On our child and adolescent unit, at least one family session is required prior to the patient’s discharge.

Individual therapy: Individual sessions occur on an as-needed basis for all units with the exception of our military unit where patients have a minimum of one individual therapy session each week.

Recreational therapy occurs at least once per day and includes activities such as physical therapy and yoga.

Daily school is provided for all of our child and adolescent patients. There is an onsite school room and lessons are led by our public school district’s teachers.

Continuing Care

Continuing care and levels of treatment for alcohol

At Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX, we begin planning for discharge the moment patients enter the hospital. This is done in order to help ensure that the transition process to the next level of treatment is as smooth as possible. The discharge plan is consistently reviewed and updated throughout the individual’s stay so that when the time for discharge arrives the patient is already set up for the next step in his or her recovery process. We believe that aftercare is a major part of treatment, so we ensure that the unique needs of each individual will be cared for, whether that be a step down into our partial hospitalization program (PHP) or our intensive outpatient program (IOP), or being provided with referrals for traditional outpatient services. For patients who require a structured plan in order to return to life’s daily routines, Red River also provides onsite therapy through our Pathways program, which includes coping skills training and supervised medication management. Whatever your needs may be, our caring and compassionate staff will make sure that you are comfortable and confident as you embark on your next stage of recovery.
